Read an interesting article on bloomberg. It defines new ways to predict future consumer tastes.

How can we expect the market to behave as history has shown it is likely to behave in the face of all this external pressure?

@Tenacious, what you are saying is true. But inspite of all these troubles market has performed pretty well in 2011. Infact its not far away from its all time high. Moreover chart pattern is looking pretty bullish, emerging markets have recovered from their lows, europe is trying to hard to avoid crisis, so who knows we might make a new high this year.

Very funny I guess in our tumultuous times that don't behave according to any text book models we might as well use the Super Bowl or Butter production!

That's right, the same data can be interpreted differently by different tools or people. To make it more crazy is using some unrelated data (like butter to predict stock market). I believe most of them are good for entertaining. Why not get some laugh during this uncertian period.

I think data mining can be a good tool its just too easy for analyst to make the data say whatever they want its hard to trust results some times.

I don't take either backtesting or data mining all that seriously. I do think it's interesting and often provides food for thought. But you have to be rational about it.

I guess they could. It's rather interesting to know how many different indicators are out there. I think choosing the right indicator that actually has a good logical backing is going to be difficult.

There are so many tricks that can be pulled when playing with raw data that if someone wanted to and they had enough data they could make anything look like it has an impact on the market.

I think you've touched on something very important @Tenacious. The agita over everything from leadership (or lack thereof) to monetary policy could skew even the most reliable indicators this year.
