If ypu are a serious scotch drinker and want ( and can afford ) the very best, this may make sense. I suspect that there are nut huge numbers that fior these criteria. If you also got a chance to invest in the rare scotches, maybe it could be classified as an investment.

I agree, @tokyogai, this seems like something we would have seen in 2007 more than today. It will actually be an interesting "canary in the coal mine" regarding the state of the economic recovery.

In my experience, there are some pretty fanatical Scotch drinkers out there. In fact, one of the most interesting groups who love Scotch and don't mind stratospheric prices are Asian businessmen.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I used to serve on a board with several Korean entreprenuers. After the meetings they would take all of us to a local Korean coffee shop which served diner food by day and transformed by night into a nightclub with three-figure bottles of Scotch.

These guys would compete with each other to buy the most expensive bottles and pass them around. I drank some amazing Scotch, the quality of which I'm sure was completely lost on me. Man, not-for-profit work is tough, but SOMEBODY'S got to do it! If Club 1494 needs a volunteer taster, I'm THERE!

I am more of a Bourbon drinker myself, but I can see where something like this would have a place in a market like NYC.

I don't see why a simialr club for rare bourbons would not work. I have had some pretty interesting ones.

It could work. Though you would have to find the right market for it.

Some types have more rare bottles and a bigger following, so they would be the most likely.

Thats true, the whiskies tend to have a bigger following, but, if you look hard enough you can find a following for any spirit.

I wonder if there are people who invest in spirits like they do with wine,
