Hey IU community--

Can you throw in the worst promotions you have seen lately?  I'm curious.

Here's one that probably backfired from the recent SXSW tech pow-wow!

Burger King's big plastic-headed King was scary.

McDonald's has their clown, and the Ronald McDonald house, and the playgrounds.  So BK invents this King charactor who mostly chases people around?

If part of the intent was to appeal to kids, this seems totally off the mark.

It also explains why BK went through so many ad agencies and CEOs, no?

BK finally got smart and hired an ad agency called mcgarrybowen, whose campaign focused on the food that BK sells and away from the "character" that McD has down pat.  If you look at industry reports, you will see that BK is growing in market share because of that very point.

It also demonstrates how the best promotion and marketing is the simplest.

Why the urologist didn't come up with a promotion on Pinterest is beyond me....

Another miss was the "I"m a Pepper, You're a Pepper, doncha wanna be a Pepper  too?" campaign for Dr. Pepper

Prior to that, one of the main appeals of Dr. P was to people who didn't want to be just like every other Coke drinker. People who choose Dr. P to show their individuality.

The "you're part of the crowd" message alienated current customers.

That bk king wasn't scary. It was terrifying! And it would show up in random places, like someone's porch or bedroom. When I saw ads for that movie "the Town," I thought of that Burger King. What a creep.

I agree simple is effective - unless it seems condescending. ADT security is running an ad here - don't know if it's national - featuring this obnoxious 30 something guy. He seems like a dweebie know it all and I switch the channel whenever he comes on. Simple message, lost on poor casting.

How about the Minnesota Twins upcoming promotional night? Guess what the team is giving all the baseball fans? Energy efficient light bulbs.

Huh?

Noreen, ADT should stick with its bread and butter ads ... The suburban white woman at home alone with two little babies when a mean old burglar strikes...only to be foiled by their amazing security service!
