Marketing or art?

I guess the labels were really for marketing and it took a Warhol to make it into art.

From what I understand, Campbells is returning Warhol's marketing love with a limited edition of its own tomato soup cans with iconic Warhol portraits on them.

They're gorgeous!  Check 'em out...

The Ketchup Bottle

My Dear Marvin,

If only Cendella had thought to use the Heinz Ketchup bottle, he'd be all over Warhol in the pop culture and pop art war.

Certainly the narrow-neck Heinz Ketchup bottle is far more iconic than the Campbell's Soup can.  In fact, when Heinz aggressively marketed a wide neck bottle, it was not a sales success -- although it was a lot easier to get the ketchup out of it.

Campbell's was always ahead of Heinz in soup marketing.  I suspect it had something to do with the "Campbell Kids" who were given away to children as dolls as early as the 1930s.  Heck, we don't see any Teresa Heinz Kerry dolls, do we?  If there were, perhaps John Kerry would have stood a chance in the 2004 election. The Campbell Kids were the inspiration for other figures such as the Pillsbury Doughboy.  I believe that I have one stashed somewhere.  My 94 year old aunt has the Campbell Kids.

Now, as I think of Canada, our frozen neighbor to the north, I think of the few warm places I have enjoyed there -- some of them even warm in winter.  Perhaps Cendella's work shold hang in the National Gallery of Art in Ottawa.

Thank you for a fabulous column.

All good wishes,

Teddy

I think with a brand like Campbell it really does come down to marketing... that drives a lot of what we see and hear about food products.

And everything is marketing. It is true for comsumer staple business 50 years ago, it is still true nowadays for high-tech industry.
