Nintendo seems to think it is a media company- or at least it is behaving that way. The theory seems to be if you put your head in the sand things will magically get better. I have talked with studio officials who think that the salavtion for them will be a resurgence of TV series box sets. My old fashioned belief is that you have to listen to your customer and provide wha they want ( silly idea, I know). The music industry almost killed itseld trying to force customers to buy CDs and albums rather than sell portable music.iTunes is now the largest music seller in the world. The studios need to look at what happened and then look at all the iPads, Smatphones and other portable devices out there. People want to have content on the go. It needs to be high quality, easy to do and reasonably priced. I think the same is true of games. Nintendo needs to wake up and give their customers what they want or fail.

Tokyogal,

You are correct. We have seen this before in music - you need to adapt to the new trends in the marketplace. Also, you would think having their first operating loss would wake them up. Maybe they need some new blood in their management team?

I agree. It looks like the company management is ignoring the obvious. This resistance to change can very well be their down fall. Even with well loved games gamers are not going to want to fall behind when their colleagues embrase more convenient gaming platforms.

Consumer Electronic is a fickle business

I remembered People camped outside Best Buy, GameStop six years ago to get their Wii or Wii related gadgets. One of my friend worked for Nintendo Marketing and Sales department, and we joked he had the easiest job in the world. People bought wii and sold it with 30% markup on craigslist next day.

It seems all over now. The lesson => if companies don't continue to innovate and provide consumers top notch gadgets, they will become history sooner or later, no matter how wonderful these companies were.

Will Apple be the next Nintendo ?

Do Japanese Companies Take TOO Long a View?

Great post @Joey!  Reading about how Nintendo seems to be in such denial put me in mind of a lunch I recently had with a good friend of mine who is in marketing with another Japanese consumer products company which shall go unnamed.

Suffice it to say that that company is failing to innovate as well and the company--in fact the whole industry--is dying on the vine as a result.

I know that Japanese businesses are renowned for taking the long view, but in the process perhaps it blinds them to the brick walls right in front of them?

It never ceases to amze me how fast "hot" things can lose their mojo. Good analysis and may this be a lesson to investors to be vigilant about shifts in trends.

I think you hit on a big problem here @street smart. The most obvious and immediate changes are ignored while everyone is trying to predict the next 10 years.

Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group has predicted Nintendo will be out of business by the end of the decade. What do you think?

The easiest way to increase cash is to bring Mario to the iPhone.

That would be a good start. Nintendo doesn't currently offer any system that allows gamers to switch easily between their portable offerings and their at-home one.
