why should an executive get a bonus for running a company thats losing money and laying off employees?

@AskAsa, that is a very valid question. There is no doubt that corporate executives are getting greedy. I feel things need to be more strictly regulated. Bonus should be a reward for hard work that benefits the entire company, including all employees, and should be withheld as punishment if poor business practices lead to problems or loss of profits.

It helps explain some of the mess we're in, doesn't it?

Earlier this month a Senate panel approved legislation to prohibit members of congress from trading on inside information and to increase disclosure about the stock trading of members of Congress.

But the committee dropped a section from the original version of the bill that would have required people in the political-intelligence business to disclose their activities in the same way as lobbyists. A growing number of individuals are being hired by hedge funds and other investors to pick up market-moving information about pending government action that can affect the stock market. The New York-based integrity research group says there are 70 such firms that generated a total of $120 million in revenue in 2010.

At least two bills have been introduced in the House-hr 1448 and hr 3550--but neither has been scheduled for a committee vote.

Wow, it must be GREAT to be in that small group. Amazing how they maintain little exposure and accountability to the world at large but individually hold alot of influence and power.

"they use their unbridled power to exempt themselves from laws that affect the rest of us. For example, pension, healthcare, insider trading, and IPO laws do not apply to the aristocrats who run this country."

Isn't there a bill sitting in Congress that would restrict their ability to take advantage of such inside information?

Yep, the wealth gap in Congress is growing...

When Representative Ed Pastor was first elected to Congress two decades ago, he was comfortably ensconced in the middle class. Mr. Pastor, a Democrat from Arizona, held $100,000 or so in savings accounts in the mid-1990s and had a retirement pension, but like many Americans, he also owed the banks nearly as much in loans.

Today, Mr. Pastor, a miner's son and a former high school teacher, is a member of a not-so-exclusive club: Capitol Hill millionaires. That group has grown in recent years to include nearly half of all members of Congress — 250 in all — and the wealth gap between lawmakers and their constituents appears to be growing quickly.

@Noreen, I think you've hit the psychological nail on the head.  People who make it to the top in politics and industry really tend toward narcissism.  It's both self-selecting (they had it to begin with) and self-reinforcing (Look at what I've accomplished; I must be worthy of mass adulation).

As Jay Leno famously said, "Politics is show business for ugly people."

WHY the rest of us go along with the dysfunction is an enduring mystery, though. We really are a nation of sheep...

Jack, I think the laws have to be amended to be appropriate in light of the latest developments. Most of the laws and regulations are decades old and need to be modified to reflect changing times. I think there should be uniform rules and regulations among all citizens, including the members of Congress.
