Google still has magic, but may be losing some luster. Back in January, YouGov released statistics from its BrandIndex. The company, which polls 5,000 people per day online, found Google had a “Buzz Score” of 39 for Google. Those figures are based on averaging positive scores (+100) with negative ones (-100). That's a pretty good score, but not when you consider this: The Google started the year with a 45.1 Buzz Score, so 39 is down by 6.1 points.

There's some emotional component to this that's hard to explain. I'm a fairly pragmatic person, so I find myself annoyed at how easily I fall for the Google is Good trap. It's almost as if I want to believe this is a great company, so I do.

Not sure how google stays atop this list given its proclivities to spy on people. If you did this analysis in Germany, where people are more upset about google maps spy vans, I think you'd get a different result. And what about the iphone's ability to track people? Is it a matter of these companies better handling there PR problems vs. BP and AIG?

I think there are more important issues than reputation in general. I think the question is how does this translate into revenue. For consumer companies like BP and Johnson and Johnson, reputation may make a difference in how people act. If people buy less BP gas because they do not like BP, this would have an impact.

"How important is a company's public perception to your investment choices?"

To me public perception is not as important as other key factors (like other investment factors PE,EPS etc). What is more important is the valuation of the stock and the return on investment.

Yes, interesting questions. In addition, what do smart companies do to maintain their places at the top or climb up from the bottom?

What would be interesting here would be to see this data over time. Clearly BP, AIG and Goldman have all been in the news recently in a bad light. By next year will people forget this or does this have a long term impact?

Every few years, i start to think that Google will tapper off, and every time i do it they prove me wrong. They keep growing, and developing new products, right now they are the kind of company that can inovate despite their massive size, it seems to be a winning combo.
