Yes. You are right about having to wait and keep speculating. May be investments you mention might be a better option.

What do you think about diversifying your investment portfolio to include these investments to beat inflation and earn in the short term while keeping a part of your investments in precious metals as insurance?

Yes I agree. It definitely will take a long time to get returns. Do you think diversifying your portfolio to include other more lucrative investments on the short term along with some insurance with precious metals might be the way forward?

I think you are right that because precious metals are rare that they will always be a good investment in the long term, the real questions is though; are you willing to wait for the return on the investment? it could be tomorrow or it could be a decade.

Cotton, gold and silver haven't been good investments over the long term. So rather than speculating, a smarter and safer strategy to beat inflation would be to concentrate your efforts on investing in good businesses. Many US blue chip companies with great international exposure are traded at historical low price, like Walmart, JNJ, etc.

When we take into account the present market conditions with the price corrections it does not seem like the right time to invest in precious metals. However, I feel that using precious as an insurance may be a good investment in the long term but not right now.

You sure about precious metals, given the events of the last 24 hours?

Michael,

I totally agree with you that gold, silver, and precious metals will take on increasingly important roles as real money, as disaster hedges, and as true stores of value. But dont you think this will create a bubble in the commodity market, which is even more dangerous to the investors. We have seen how gold and silver corrected sharply last week. Do you feel corrections like these will be common in future ?

I think we are all concerned about the US dollar, but I am not sure that speculating in metals is the best course of action. Look at what has happened with silver in the last few days. These positions can change quickly when it is the hoard of investors setting the price rather than true market values.

I am sure a lot of us are worried about the US dollar, but Ii am worried that if too many people start to invest in gold or other metals as insurance against the failure of the dollar then we will only hurt it long term.

I dont know the answer for fixing the issues with the dollar, but I think if the masses of people start to hedge against it then they are going to drive it down further.

I'm worried about the future of the US dollar. What about other currencies such as the Yuan? I know it is over valued at the moment but many people seemed to be investing in it. And there is also the fact that more dollars can be printed everyday. But precious metals... specially ones that are finite in nature cannot be replaced. As long as their value is appreciated I feel they can act as a good insurance.
