I could not agree more, it makes no sence to ban the practice if a safe method can be developed. If the nations energy security is going to rest in part on the use of shale gas then a best practicies policy is going to need to be developed.

Absolutely. The issue to me is not banning the practice but taking rational steps to understand the best ways to use it so we maximize our gain and limit the liabilities.

Really good analysis, but given the low incidence of problems so far, we may have no choice but to continue development at some level. The reports of increased methane in some water wells is not a complete surprise- the question is how serious is this problem? The fact that chemical contamination seems to be absent is very positive and our need for energy is not declining. This economic pressure will continue to build with $100 oil, so if we find problems we need to determine how to fix them.
