"Neither option strikes me as a great idea for a disciplined, long-term investor."

A what? ;-) There would be no market if there were only disciplined, long-term investors. This is why a computer glitch can the bottom out of the market in minutes. That's why there are circuit breakers.

Not dismissing the article or even the point, only pointing out that much of the market is run either by fear/hype or is simply on autopilot.

I don't think everyone charges that high although it's the rate for AQR. Are there any other Alpha options available whose charges are more affordable to the average investor?

I had to smile when I read your post. I agree with you about the massive fees. And the idea of having to invest $1 million just to get in well that sure does make things a bit difficult. It certainly would be interesting if the same benefits can be reaped without the huge fees involved. Any suggestions on how this can be done?

Adding Alpha to Beat Risk

The concept of adding Alpha is hugely intriguing, especially if there's a way to do it without adding the massive fees most ALPHA DOG hedge fund managers charge to even walk onto the playing field.

There would need to be a lot of education regarding risk, but I think such a product would be the ALPHA to OMEGA of individual investor interest!

Got those puns out of my system...

I think there are ways for an individual investor to use positions in multiple funds to try to approximate what hedge fund managers can do.  Do you agree? Would this help an individual investor "add alpha".
