This is fundamental to any investment. It's probably also fundamental to any success and life happiness. I am going to print it out, hang it in front of my reading lamp / trading station and re-read it every time I want to do anything related to investment. Thank you for sharing this piece with us.
Can You Think and Grow Rich?

I have been a fan of Napoleon Hill since I discovered him a few years ago via one of his quotes that I traced back to its source. It was the tip of the iceberg for this unsung hero of a philosopher, empowerment guru and capitalist. He's Oprah if you want to dispense with the pity party get some RESULTS!!!
The Napoleon Hill Foundation is a wonderful resource as a website and on Facebook. Liking the Facebook page will furnish you with a quote a day the likes of which with humble and amaze you.
As you may know, Andrew Carnegie decided to devote the first forty years of his life to MAKING money and the second forty to giving it away. The premise of Think and Grow Rich is that Carnegie is sharing his secrets with Hill so that others can re-make themselves in Carnegie's image and do the same thing--make a ton of money and become philanthropists.
It's not dissimilar to what Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are doing now by getting billionaires to agree to leave a significant portion of their estates to charity instead of their heirs. But this empowers the common man (or woman) who is willing to be focused, disciplined and hard-working to actually make the money in the first place.
Napoleon Hill was dirt poor from the back woods of Southwest Virginia before he became the reporter who bonded with Andrew Carnegie who had himself grown up dirt poor in Scotland before making his fortune in America. This awesome book is the product of their shared desire to commit the how-to steps of the AMERICAN DREAM to paper.
Buy a copy TODAY, but make sure it's the original 1937 version because entrepreneurs trying to make a buck on newer versions perhaps ironically but inevitably abound!
There are few things that I enjoy less than driving, but between 1977 and 1982 while I drove an hour each way to work I listened to a tape of "Think and Grow Rich" and it made the time a pleasure.
There is no book of this type that I can recommend more highly or more warmly for the good it did for me.
Thank you for recommending it, I hope many will follow your suggestion.
PS. I moved within 2 miles of work in 1984 and now work from home.
Thanks for the comments. Fred, you are right T&GR is perfect for commuting. "Street Smart" Good point about getting the original version, there are many "revised" and "improved" versions that don't add much. "Well said" glad this has inspired you! It got me inspired while I was writing it!
I have been trying to "Think and Grow Rich" for about 5 years now...unfortunately, that hasn't worked out too well for me. Seriously, it is almost a necessity to have a good book, or some form of self-help/motivational/inspirational material to help you continue down the path to riches. i strongly recommend that investors find a good tool and stick with it.

I kind of think of it as the whole "diet" market that is out there too. There are a million self help books, research, tv ads, products, etc. One can find themselves doing research for a year and before they know it, it's 12 months later and they are 5 pounds heavier than they were. As with anything, you need to be prudent and reasonable. There's no secret to getting thin fast and there's no secret for getting rich fast. Do a reasonable amount of research, come up with an achievable game plan, and go for it. There's always a chance for failure but there's 100% chance of failure by not acting at all.

For me, the most inciteful and difficult of those self-help tips is to build the alliance of masterminds. A lot easier said than done ... The toughest part being finding folks with your interests and ambition who you can TRUST. Good luck with that.

I agree the mastermind group is almost impossible to find so we need to at least find similar people that we can learn and grow from. Surrounding oneself with individuals that are not financially astute is deadly it is contagious and you will soon find yourself in the wrong financial position.

Napoleon Hill is a great example of the power and purity of good ideas.
His simple steps about seizing the opportunities that often come disguised as failures or dispelling the ghosts of fear continue to guide thousands of people to more successful careers.
I'm glad you brought up the importance of getting the original version. Over the years so many people have taken the success strategies and absolutely perverted them. Books about attaining success by Intimidating others or persuading people with mind tricks rather than force of honest personality could have diluted the Think and Grown Rich message. Happily, most of them failed and the original ideas tower above all the others.
Thanks for you article.
Thank you for recognizing the importance of Think and Grow Rich. It truly was the foundational work for personal development and personal finance.
It was published in 1937 and in 1938 Hill wrote Outwitting the Devil as its sequel. Thinking it to be too controversial at the time, Hill's family hid the book away until now. Releasing in June 2011, this book is as relevant today as it was when he originally wrote it in 1938. While Think and Grow Rich outlines the principles of success, Outwitting the Devil outlines what may still keep you from achieving the success you deserve and how you can break through those barriers and succeed.
Profound, provocative and life-changing ...for more info www.outwittingthedevil.com
