I hope you are right, but I think some of those imagegs as being the kind that last in memory.

Maybe but people do forget things like this quickly if they die down. I think the next week or so is key.
ProfR,
I think you are correct in that the protests will more then likely die down rather quickly, but i think the world wide media blitz about them will have a lasting effect (even if its just this season) on the tourism biz.

Taking the other side on this:
1. I know this is difficult on people but something needed to be done. If this calms down and the economy stays OK, this might help Greece turn around.
2. Since the protests are against the government, they might die down now that a decision has been made. So not sure how much this will effect tourism.

The thing that is really sad is that for years the greeks have been financing their way of life and now when it comes to an end, those hit hardest are the neediest. This should have been taken care of years ago.

It is saddening to see that austerity measures might actually bring about more problems that it solves. It is a pity that all this had to happen right on peak tourist season. It looks like a vicious never ending downward cycle. Any chance of recovery with the tourist season now seems like a no go.
Yes, it's all a tragedy for Greece, a beautiful country with great food. Been there a few times and it is one of the more memorable places. Too bad all of this news hurts tourism, hurts the economy, and for sure will hurt the Greek spirit. Let's hope they can lift themselves up by virtue of their history and culture.

Street Smart, you might be right about the cruise ship tourism, and I for the sake of Greece i hope you are, but it dosnt seem to be going in that direction right now. the end of the season might be saved, but anything in the next month and a half or so is going to take a BIG hit.
I know that Greece is also a desination location for many private yachts, with any luck that sector of the tourism might not take as big of a hit. But you bring up a valid point, it is only if anyone has brains enough to take those steps.

You are absoultely right. I don't see any way to avoid this kind roit, no matter what kind of decision or conclusion they make. Tougher life ahead for most people living in Greek. Sad.

The riots are terrifying, and you're right #TelecomFreq that they don't make anybody want to hop on a plane! There's still a lot of cruise ship tourism that might--MIGHT--still be preserved if anyone has any brains.
