I think the US government is going to have to resolve some of the issues around tax increases, government deficit, infrastructure spending, healthcare costs before companies are going to be more aggressive around hiring.

Updating your skills or even changing your career to cater to the current job market needs looks like a good way forward.

@Phoenix, I agree with you. Recently i read a report on "Skills gap leaving many US companies without workers". Report says the skills gap is already taking an economic toll.

In other words, do what you can to hold on to your job if you have one. If you lose it, you're not likely to get a new one anytime soon.

Noreen,

Is it situation only in USA or does it applies to all the countries in general, because in India there are lot of openings and many big IT companies are planning to hire in thousands.

Phoenix, I think you are right about creating a handout culture if people just give up on looking for employment. unemployment bennifits are a great thing to help people bridge a gap in their life, they are not a way to earn a living. In order to turn not just the economy people who are unemployed need to take action and update their skills in order to get back into the job force.

If people just give up even looking for jobs just because its hard they are only going to be a further burden to the economy as many would just claim unemployment benefits. This would create a 'handout culture'. What do you think? Well this has to be changed. Positive thinking is supposed to bring powerful results and I think Mr. Stanley has the right mindset. What do you think? I know for a fact that thinking alone does not bring about the changes we need. What more can we do to change the situation?

For the majority of them it was the only option, so many of the jobs that were lost are just not going to come back. the work force needs to advance along with the economy if we are going to make a recovery from all of this.

Being optimistic is going to be difficult but facing reality is someting that can be done in a way that would hopefully bring positive results. I think your friends have the correct attitude. Updating your skills or even changing your career to cater to the current job market needs looks like a good way forward.

The Job Hunt

I have more than a few friends who have been on the hunt for new jobs, the outlook has been dim. Of my friends who have done the best are those who have changed fields or the few that have started a small buisness. It seems that as our economy recoveres it is also changing form and many of the jobs that were in place before the bust will not return, many people will need to retool and update their skills.

Job search issues

Many of my friends who have also tested the job market will confirm that things have changed. The multiple interviews and starnge questions are getting worse and then the offers are way below what would normally be expecetd. there really is a feeling of despair and panic that is becomeing prevalent.

This post is so bittersweet. I feel so fortunate to be working, and feel so much empathy for those who are looking for work because I realize how demoralizing the search can be.

When, realistically, will we turn this situation around?
