AskAsa,

I feel that FB has to do some revamping to keep that edge there.  They need to first figure out how to eliminate the spam posts/links.  It is turning many people off of the site.  They also need to create some more things to lock the user in.  A good example of this, I received an email today from KodakGallery with a link to upload all my FB pictures into KodakGallery.  I can then order prints, mugs, gifts, etc through Kodak with my FB pictures.  It's the simple things like this that if the site is a complex social managment tool, they will continue to grow.

Wendy, I am of the opinion that this is the first true internet monopoly we have seen.  We often hear about the fall of myspace and other sites but none of those sites reached the mass audience....from age 10 to age 90.  Myspace was always a young person's site.  You have kids, parents, grandparents, co-workers, etc. all on FB and to create a new site that is able to attract this mass audience is going to be difficult.  I don't care how slick Google + is, my 60+ year old mother is not learning a new site.  She is comfortable on FB along with all her friends and family and it would take something extreme to move them.

I think you hit the nail on the head, once more poeple are signed up the experience will become better for the user. since it is driven by the content provided by those in your circles you need to have people in them in order to get a good experience out of it. I think once it opens up to everyone it will be big, very big.

Not much yet but sure has potential.  Latest stats show over 10 million users on Google + and that is simply through people inviting each other through an email invite.  Yes, that fails to compare to over a quarter billion on FB but it's no chump change either.  The question remains whether these 10 million intend to utilize or just wanted to check it out.  I got the invite from a friend and after signing up, I am not excited to go back but that may change once I have more "friends" on the network.

Agreed.  And you are also going to be less inclined to sign up for Google + when it hits the market or any other competitor for that matter.  It's a principle of protecting your customer base.  It's the same concept that grocery stores and gas stations use with loyalty cards.  It's that little "link" to the company that keeps you coming back for more opposed to going to the competitor.

Heinrich and AskAsa,

Hmmm... Your opinions are quite interesting. Maybe I shall dig a little more into those data and statistic. Well, it's certainly interesting to see how this new thing come out at the end.

One can speculate but nothing conclusive can be said about the potential for Facebook to grow until their numbers come out next April.  On the other hand, the web site may have value as a company that doesn't grow at all, much like a utility.

Efforts by the company to liven up the financial picture with new widgets and tie-ins has encountered resistance from the users/stakeholders.  PR from rival institutions can reflect and often fuel this.  Having a profit-sharing plan would be an interesting incentive to motivate a user base that otherwise has what has a striking resemblance to bureaucratic inertia, holding fast to the rules of "cool".

Despite  the new subscriber figures I believe the novelty of Facebook is starting to wear out.

While many people feel obligated to set up a presence for personal or commercial reasons, if you look at the sites there's often a decline in new posts and general use by existing subscribers.

Gimmicky fundraisers  buyers clubs and dubious contests prove annoying to many users.

I would not bet the farm on this new venture.

Goolgle+ is pretty good, it has 10 million users since it launched several weeks. I think it will be a strong competitor to Facebook. On the other hand, the social network market is getting bigger and bigger. It's probably OK for both companies share it. Form tech and innovation perpective, it's good to have a strong competitor out there, to motivate everyone works even harder and smarter. It's also good for users to have choices.

Google definitely want to terminate Facebook . I will give it 50/50 chance of success. Anyway, Goolge+ will make facebook's life hard. Even worse, android seems to dominate the smart phone market, Google can manipulate its control of android to compete with Facebook effectively
