I totally agree with you that Apple blows away even the optimists. Some reports even suggests that Apple is richer than US govt. I feel Apple should  purchase companies that complement its own services rather than just pile up the cash.

When we used to blind test consumer products Apple would win on ergonomics and ease of use.

Think of Sony, and how after nearly two decades of the walkman, watchman, discman - Apple introduces the ipod and basically takes over the portable entertainment hardware market.  .

The first Ipod models were so easy to handle and operate you didn't even need an instruction book.

Jobs is to blame more than anybody else that he's made himself indispensible to the company ... or should I say to the company's image. When he goes, Apple will become just "any other tech company." A very successful any other tech company probably, but it will lose its mystique and some of its techie idolator support, and I think part of its popular appeal because of that.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple’s board of directors sounded out other tech companies to identify a successor for Steve Jobs. Jobs himself denied the story as “hogwash.”

However, being realistic, you have to expect the board to be talking. Who do you predict to be the successor? Any speculation beyond COO Tim Cook? Will it go outside the Apple family?

Broadway,

Apple uses a classic underpromise-and-overdeliver strategy. That being said, most people don't believe their guidance anymore. It's obvious that they are serial sandbaggers.

I feel Apple would still continue to grow even without Jobs as long as they play according to their strengths. There has to be a good team behind him to bring this type of success. I just hope another innovative leader will get to lead that team after Jobs.

Scott, why do you think analysts can't get it right with Apple? Sure, Apple is surprising analysts and observers in the right way, but how is Apple able to do this?

I love my iPhone and couldn't live without it.  I also love that I bought the stock a couple years back when it was much less than it is today.  Still, I wonder what may happen when Mr. Jobs finally sucumbs to his illness.

It is true that Newton is too big to comfortably carry around. I don't think the design team wanted it that big, it was impossible to make it smaller based on the hardware technology available at that time.  I hated the sylus -- Lost several of them for my PalmV.
