Maybe this is a cultural thing yalanand. But many people I know -- parents and their children -- look forward to separate living quarters. And the parents find sharing space with their adult children financially draining rather than cost saving if the "kids" are unemployed and unable to contribute financially.

I feel fortunate my entry level job occurred years ago, because it must be very frustrating to be a new grad in search of an opportunity.

@Dex I feel experienced people are also at risk. If they get fired it would be very tough for them to find new jobs, because companies don't want to pay higher salaries to experienced workers when they can get it done at lower cost from fresh graduates.

Your kids are moving back -- if, in fact, they ever moved out.

I know that's bad news from an economic point of view, but it's a very good thing from a family point of view. It can be a lot fun being with family and spending time with parents. Moreover, it's economical to stay with family because living costs are shared.

Granted there are a lot of young people without jobs, but at least they are all in it together.... well, maybe thats not so much of an upside after all.

Back in the 90s I left college to jump on the .com band wagon, made some good money until the the .com world went bust, and I was out of a job and not making any money. but at least I was able to get a job and having something listed on my resume, and that was able to open some doors to other things for me.

Today, without being able to get a job many young people who are fresh out of college are just stuck. In many cases underemployment is worst than unemployment; because it can you someonone stuck in a rut they might not be able to get out of for a long time.

I hope the economy turns around for young people; because if we are not developing the talent of tomorrow then the whole country might be in worst trouble than we thought........

@Prof R - I like the suggestion of starting at a non-profit.  Volunteer opportunities can also be an accessible way for a young person to find work they like (or don't like).

Both of my teenage sons are still in school, but they were able to find entry-level jobs in retail.  Summer jobs.  One enjoyed telling friends he was a Stocker who worked nights.  People, especially girls, would often misinterpret this -- What? you're a Night Stalker?

By the end of the summer, both of my sons noticed that - because of high turnover - thier level of experience put them in the middle-of-the-pack.  I know these are not the kinds of jobs that most college graduate would choose for a starting point.  Still, if you're willing and able to work, you may find that starter jobs like this can lead to opportunities.  And if it helps get you out of mom's house sooner, that's a good thing, right?

When you are young, you have a lot of time, but not much money. When you are old, you have a lot of money, but not enough time. The best balance is to play hard while you are young and never worry about something you can not control.

As Mr. Buffett once said: You don't want to save sex for old age. Actually there are lots of things you can not save for old age.

Depressing Future

I agree this is depressing. It's difficult after one has worked so hard for a degree, to then have so many doors shut. It's a good point you bring up the need to delay major life changes. Even young people that are working these days are too cautious and do not want to invest or take any risks. How much will thisl affect the future socially and economically?

Look at Non-profits

This is depressing for the young but it is not surprising. Many companies are still not hiring so that definitely effects the prospects for new grads. Some of these grads should look at non-profits for employment. A person does not make as much money with a non-profit as in the private sector but he/she would get some experience on a resume.

Many of the new grads I speak with have become demoralized, frustrated and a bit bitter. They incurred college loans because the adults assured them it would help them find a job...and now they're back at square one,
