My take on the debates: I'd rather watch reruns of ... I don't know ... anything. Even Lost.

Marvin, nothing starts my day more pleasantly than reading one of your posts skewering the foibles of the ruling class, but I don't think debates done properly are all that bad. I actually think debates depend on a strong moderator to succeed, not the lack of one!

To be clear, you won't get any argument from me that the current Republican proceedings are a farce.  I tune out their inane content by watching Dancing with the Stars or old re-runs of Criminal Minds instead.  By substituting those two viewing experiences, I feel I miss NOTHING at all about the debates--no spray tans, no hairspray, no psycho-pathology...NOTHING.

But once the major party candidates are set and the actual debates begin, those have an excellent track record of substance.  We just have a V-E-R-Y long time to wait before we get there.  Just 3,678 episodes and one mirror ball trophy to go...

Frankly, at this point, I'll take either: a strong moderator or an insightful conversation, As it is, we're getting nothing. I am so frustrated by the crop of candidates I can't see straight. Is this really the best we have to offer?

Frustrated is the right word. I can think of a lot of words to describe the candidates at the end of the debates, but inspiring is NEVER one of them.

True enough. But are they will to come forward? We'll have to wait and see. Hope we see something good along the way. A good face to face exchange addressing note worthy issues.

What I can't figure out about the debates is that it feels like the candidates are doing themselves more harm than good in the long run by running their mouths off.  To Marvin's point about wishing they could be alone together in a room hashing things out, they seem to forget that they're NOT alone on that stage!

Like those Lost re-runs that poor Tenacious has been reduced to watching, on Republican Debate Island, there is no evolution, no science, no health care, no taxes, etc. Everyone has perfect hair, has written a book, and takes turns flogging his or her pet causes with complete disregard for the truth or the US Constitution.

But here's the thing:  Those remarks are BEING RECORDED.  They have an infinite life on the Internet.  They will play forever on YouTube.  As I write this, they are being crafted into Obama, Romney, Perry...and perhaps even Palin commercials.

The candidate who will win will be the candidate with the greatest impulse control, which involves speaking only when spoken to.

A moderator, a moderator, MY KINGDOM for a moderator!

StreetSmart, you'd hope that the truthy-ness and at times sheer lunacy of these presidential "contender" remarks will catch up with them, should one finally make it out into the general contest. That's when all the YouTube of their inane remarks will hurt them with centrist, down to earth, nonpartisan voters and business people and investors who just want sensible practical solutions for real problems. Or do no such nonpartisan business voters exist anymore?

Checking the midday headlines, this caught my eye and I HAD to SHARE!

Republican Presidential Candidates Seek Donald Trump Stamp of Approval

"All the major Republical presidential hopefuls have sought an audience with Trump, just months after President Barack Obama dismissed the TV reality show personality as a 'carnival barker' for raising debunked questions about Obama's citizenship.

...Republican strategists say candidates could also learn a lot politically from Trump, whose aggressive criticism of Obama and blunt portrait of the U.S. as a nation in decline have resonated with conservative voters looking for an in-your-face challenge to the president."

I don't think that's it at all.  I think they just want some hair grooming tips!

They hold no weight when it comes to voting because they aren't about voting. They're just personality contests.
