If there was ever a visual representation that proves I have no reason to invest in ETFs, it is that chart in this post, I get lost almost as soon as I start,

You're right Ashish. Someone has to be sacrificed -- and it might as well be the small investor. He's got the least to lose, right? And if he was important, he'd have the resources to play with the big boys.

As I understand them (and I'm the first to say I'm not an expert), ETF's can have advantages over mutual funds for the small investor--lower fees, more trading flexibility, and better tax treatment under certain capital gains distribution scenarios.

I think the problem comes in when small investors get in over their heads and try to get "too cute" for lack of a more technical term.  Most small individual investors (myself included) can easily get their heads handed to them trying to understand derivatives, much less use ETF's to in essence create their own!

Obviously, one should never invest money that one is not willing to lose.  To that I would add my own "ETF rule":  Don't invest in anything that you'd be unable to explain to your spouse (or yourself) HOW you lost the money!

So if we agree it's not about the small guy, the question is : how much should we do to protect the small guy? Do we let him be sacrificed so the big guys can make money? Do we protect them from themselves? Tough questions.

Noreen,

Atleast somebody can make money in this deal so what if its not you(or the Retail Investor).

Atleast the super-smart finance pros who put money into this deal are happy-very,very happy with the returns they get.

So what if the retail investor has to take on so much risk in return?

It really never was about the small guy,was it???

Regards

Ashish.
