But more investors plan to use ETFs than understand them.

@Noreen, this is really interesting fact. Why are ETFs so popular among investors ? Do you its the ETF returns that are attracting the investors ?

True. Just look at Congress. They have so much paper passing in front of them, they don't even bother reading most legislation now.

@mInvestor Yes, when the prospectus is so long that people don't read it anymore; it does make things worse.

There is no difference to the investor between a well-written prospectus for a good investment and a bad prospectus written by a thief, if that investor doesn't read it.

In fact, the thief can write all kinds of strong warnings, knowing that his words will only be read after the fraud. If it gets to the courts, these warnings will be read and will make the investor seem more the fool.

PredicatableChaos,

You are right. More documents or consents won't solve the problem. Sometimes they made things even worse.

Do you find yourself clicking the "I Agree" button a lot? Everytime you buy an airline ticket or use wi-fi at the coffee shop, there is a legal document for you to read. Always seems to be twice as long as it could be.

I used to read everything before I signed. Today, I don't think anybody does.

Somewhere there is a group of lawyers thinking about the problems with ETF's and the solution they'll probably come up with either fills your mailbox or has the "I Agree" button at the end. How do we convince them that more words won't solve this?

Dex,

I like to look at it from the basis of Personal responsibility. There is nobody else looking out for you.So you might as well do all your research and due diligence yourself.

Because if you do flounder/fail you only have yourself to blame.

Ashish.

I agree. I'm not surprised by I am disappointed that so many investors are jumping into ETFs with their eyes wide shut. You would think we had spread the message of "do your homework" far enough now that more investors would listen.

Scott Burns comment is funny. To acknowledge that investing is hard is a fundamental truth that both individuals and institutions try to deny. It's akin to weight loss: there is no easy way to your goal.
