On Saturday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry told a group of voters that Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme" and a "monstrous lie" to younger Americans. It's not the first time the GOP presidential candidate has made such claims. The Texas governor also described Social Security as a Ponzi scheme in his 2010 book, "Fed Up!," and has argued the program is unconstitutional and could be handed over to the states.

LOL.

It will be interesting to know when these pension funds started to invest in internation funds. We knew that the many pension funds jumped into the Subprime mortgage right before the 2008 crash. Hope they will be smarter this round.

Euro is falling apart, Japanese seems will have another lost decade. China economic growth may hit a wall.  US is in bad shape, but may not be the worst.

People invested in International Equity could be the last fool to hold the bag.

Interesting to see how the large investors have shifted out of US equities. Must see some writing on the wall. But where abroad is safe? That's the unanswered question, by anyone.

I agree - it is all about returns. Operation twist further makes treasuries have lower returns. I  worry about the safety of this strategy.

The Census data is not that granular, so it doesn't provide a deeper peek into the investments of the fund. The increase in the "other" category does suggest that gold may be gaining favor. However, gold expert Chris Goolgasian recently guesstimated that institutional investors have less than 1% of their assets in gold -- though he acknowledged that hard data is hard to find,

Noreen, I think the pension fund managers are feeling that investment in foreign money or agency can have better returns. This is very common in other countries also, they wants a better yield.

I also wonder what other securities they have invested in. The international investment sector as mentioned has shown a steady increase. Do you know in which countries they have invested in? I hope they do not have too many investments in the euro zone at present.

I notice the "other securities" is large and growing share of the pension portfolio - now 22.2%

Wonder how much of this is in Gold, Silver, other precious metals or commodities like oil?

Streetsmart - If you were investing pension funds, where would you put them? Do you think foreign holdings are riskier than US stocks and bonds?
