Unless you are a trader it is hard to give a best pick as there is too much volatility unrelated to the Company. A portfolio approach with ETF's are the best way to play the sector.
Two new ideas for today are Human Genome Sciences(HGSI $9.76) and Optimer (OPTR $14.70).
Read www,raygent.com for more life sceince information and picks.
You are correct that the life sciences and new biotechnology drug developments are not in the news due to macro events and the debt crisis. Moreover the NIH budget is being cut about 5% and that has an impact on the tools and diagnostics sector.
But if you follow the sector just by checking the biotechnology news and stocks on Reuters, Google and Yahoo you will be kept up to date. Pick ten biotech stocks and ETF's(IBB,XBI) put them up on Yahoo and track them for news.
Or read www.raygent.com.
I don't like to give "best picks" due to volatility.A portfolio approach is best. Gilead is a good long term, large cap pick at the $40 level. The Company is a leader in HIV therapy with additional antiviral therapies for Hepatitis. The Company recently filed a New Drug Application with the FDA for their single dose QUAD pill for HIV.
Two speculative idesa are Human Genome Sciences (HGSI) and Optimer(OPTR).
Focus on biopharmaceuticals and look at my picks on

Rod, biotech is an upcoming sector, where lots of technological developments are happening. Event though these developments are happening, it's not reaching to the common people yet though.I think government has to promote more bio technology applications with necessary funding. But I think due to the current economic slowdown, federal governments are not able to fund as much as needed.
Biotech is such a big field a top pick would be nice. Its hard sometimes to see the big picture on some of the projects these companies are working on.

Thank you Rod for the very detailed information. I've thought that biotech was too risky an investment. But your article makes me want to reconsider. I'm also interested in knowing your best pick.
I am interested in Rod's top pick too. I am very interested in Gilead Sciences (GILD). Personally I know several very smart people working there, having tracked it for a while. But I am not an expert on Biotech and would like to hear from Rod's opinion
Gimme your best pick, bro.
