Samsung went with Android for their phones and Android is a good operating system. However, Android phones are still somewhat harder to use than Apple phones. If Apple fixes the battery problem in a few weeks, I think most Apples users will stick with them.

I am a pretty dedicated Android user, and I can say i only charge my phone ever few days. ;-)
I think Apple makes these mistakes often with regards to how they handle issues. the antenna dosnt work? your holding the phone wrong, your batterie is crappy? you keep your phone on too much! For a company that prides itself on design down to the lasst detail these are some very big misses, and I think these will be more noticed, and more remembered now that Jobs is gone. ![]() User Rank

My wife hates her Android phone. Constantly crashing.

@Scott, I too have Android phone (Samsung Galaxy) but I haven't faced any issues with it so far. Infact the only complaint with that mobile is its battery life.

Most people I know find the Android experience to be inferior, but then again they tend to be cheaper.

I have both Apple devices, and android devices. for tablet, Apple still one leg ahead of all competition. But iPhone starts to fall behind. For an phone with premium price, it has crappy small screen, no 4G support, no replaceable battery, Apple really need to catchup samsung

I agree that Apple has a much nicer UI than any Android device, but what I see setting the Android apart is that the platform is on so many diffent types of hardware that it will naturally have more market share.
and Google intergrated into everything about it. for a phone I will not go with anything but an Androide at this point. User Rank

I can't stop noticing that Apple's iPhone is not the top-notched smartphone any more. It seems that Apple runs out of innovative ideas to improve it. While Android phones are evolving fast, iPhone can not afford the luxury to crawling forward - I mean a 4S for eighteen months' work, it is not impressive at all

I think what holds them back in this regard is that Apple is one compay building one phone but with the Android platform you have many companies making many phones. the math is easy, the tablet market will do the same.

TelecomFreq:
I don't think the most important thing to hold them back is limited offer. Actually Limited Offer is one advantage of Apple. It simplified the whole supply chain, which Tim Cook is very good at. Apple's whole strength comes from innovation at fast speed. In the last decade, they came with a revolutionary product every 2-3 years. Once this momentum is slowed down, the tough time will come. Value Hiker, there is no doubt that Apple has brought some fairly advanced technology to market, at a rapid pace over the past decade, but I think the real commodity it brought was ground breaking design.
You bring up a good point with regards to supply chain, but I still think so many companies making Droid tablets will overwhelm the iPad in the next few years. User Rank
Platinum NO RATINGS
TelecomFreq, I am not saying the iPad is invicible, on the contrary, I am quite disappointed on iPad 2. Like iPhone 4S, it is not an innovative design, just a new device with small improvements here and there.
There are many companies making Droid tablets now, so far only two devices show real strength: Samsung Galaxy & Kindle Fire. Most other Android tables are either too expensive (like Xoom) or too low end. They can't post real threat to iPad. Samsung is facing injunction from Apple's lawsuit while we can not buy the Kindle Fire till late this month. Apple may face more competition next year in tablet market as you predicted User Rank

I think the transformer is a good concept and works very well and the new transformer prime that is coming out in a week or so looks to be interesting as well.
The big issue is that for every good Droid tablet there are 10 that are so bad they are not even usable. User Rank

Scott, what phone, and what version?
With my current Droid I have not had any issues, but since the platform is open source, there will be times you have to work through some issues. User Rank

"We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks."
I feel this issue wont affect Apple so much because this issues can be easily fixed by updating the software. But no body expects Apple to do such mistakes because Apple charges heavy premium for its devices. User Rank

you are assuming that the real issue is a software bug, time will tell.

Like with the antenna problem, Apple has accepted that they have a battery problem. If they fix it fast, I do not see this having much of an impact.

You know, I like Apple. But really, the company is annoying. Went into an Apple store today to ask about the battery issue and STILL got a convoluted answer from a clerk (she was definitely not a genius). And what annoyed me was she tried to tell me 5 hours of battery life on a smartphone is "normal."
User Rank
Platinum NO RATINGS
It's hard to believe 5 hours--even 7 or 8 hours--is considered OK battery life, especially for a device that you can't even carry a spare battery for!!

I updated my iPad, iPod touch to iOS 5 weeks ago. No battery issue so far. I doubt it is a software issue. Almost all issues reported are related to iPhone, especially 4S.

@TelecomFreq, I am not assuming this is what Apple claims. User Rank

Yalanand, Just because apple says it doesn't make it true. Right now it's just speculation. Keep in mind this is also the same company that said there was no antenna issue with the iPhone when no one old get signal.

TelecomFreq, that makes for an interesting observation. Now with Jobs gone -- who was a control freak with pr as with much of everything else -- how will Apple handle pr. Before, they denied denied denied until Jobs decided it was OK to admit a fault and fix it. Will they continue with this idiotic pr policy?
User Rank
Gold NO RATINGS
They should come up with a good PR policy for sure. The new operating system not only has a lower battery life I have noticed that it has also significantly slowed down the system.I really like the iPhone and I'd be sorry to have to replace it if all these problems continue.

Most other companies wouldn't be able to get away with Apple's pr tactics. But Apple always gets the benefits of the doubt, because people, investors included, are not just infatuated with the company, they're in love. And like anyone in love, they're willing to take some abuse.

I know you are right @broadway. But that doesn't make this any less crazy. We jump on every other company but always give Apple a pass. Maybe there is some subliminal programming in these devices!

Good points. and abuse is the right word. I was in a Verizon store Friday and heard one of the sales reps testing an iPhone, actually testing the interface with Siri. You know what that dang piece of AI crap said? "Don't ask me anymore questions."

@TelecomFreq, The iPhone maker has already issued a beta of its next software update to developers called 5.0.1, assuring it will eliminate battery life concerns. So I think its not speculation. User Rank

In the interest of disclosure I do not own an iphone, in fact I only own one apple product. However I understand technology and while everyone wants the latest and greatest new gadget its technology it’s going to have bugs in its initial relapse. I was a product manager and understand this clearly—I have the t-shirt to prove itJ. The price you pay for early adoption is glitches if users want perfect wait till the product is out at least six months and reaches a critical mass.

Understood. But this battery issue is plaguing not only the 4S but the iPhone 4--and that's been out far longer than 6 months, The battery issues on the iPhone may have been exacerbated by the operating system update, but they were there even before it on many of these older phones.

Very true. In fact all the former iPhones also had lesser battery life than my old trusted Nokia phone. Before you ask the time I spent talking or using the phone was much more with the Nokia. So there is a battery life problem with iPhone.
User Rank

Apple is very remiss in its quality assurance testing to claim its iPhone operates for 8 hours on a charge and allows 6 hours of internet use. These parametrics are very easy to test and the fact that phones slipped through the cracks speaks to the vigorous competition Apple faces, narrowing its time-to-market window.

@Phoenix I have used many mobiles so far and Nokia had the best battery life. I really miss my Nokia these days. I really hope they will release android phone eventually because Nokia provides some of the best hardware features in its mobile.

I've downloaded the software update that apple issued to help with the battery life. I'm still testing it. Hopefully it solves the problem. I also miss my Nokia phones. I've had three. And I really liked all three. They never stopped working or had any bugs. I simply gave them away when I upgraded. Whereas with my first iPhone it actually kept getting stuck. But I must say iPhones are also very addictive. When you've had one you don't want to go back.

My old Nokia was the most durable phone I ever had. It went through the washing machine twice and survived an unfortunate dousing with bug repellant when a bottle broke in a backpack -- and just kept going. Of course, it only did what phones were expected to do 15 years ago: made and received calls.

Apple has told iPhone 4S parts suppliers to delay part of their calendar Q4 shipments into the first quarter “as sales of the iPhone 4S have not been as strong as those concluded in the pre-sales period,” according to DigiTimes, noting that the situation also reflects “shortages in the supply of some key components.”

Apple customers say devices with the new iOS 5 operating system are still suffering from weak battery life, even after the company issued a software update meant to fix the malfunction. Does it mean if this is hardware bug ?
User Rank
Blogger NO RATINGS
Well, I installed the update. So far, it seems like there is an improvement with the battery life, but it's too early to quantify the gain.
User Rank

I think the updated software works. I managed to use the phone for two whole days without charging. However, I must mention that I was not on the phone for long durations like I used to do with my old nokia. Those days I used to work for a telecom company so everything we did was through the phone and I was basically on the phone most of the time.
I also managed to dump my old iphone 3 in water. But it still worked. I kept it switched off for a full day though. I had a plastic casing on it as well. User Rank

For Apple, it's time to act now to resolve the issue soon enough, otherwise people will swap buying iPhones to competitor devices. I hope Apple will do the necessary to make the battery life better: to at least 8 hours without having to re-charge.

I'd suggest turning off bluetooth unless you're actually using it. Wifi isn't a problem. Check your location services, too -- only use location services for applications that you want and need the capability for (for example, maps).

One more thing, Big Jim. If you're using a standard iphone 4 or 4s, you may have apps running in the background, draining battery life. Double click the home button twice to generate a row of open apps -- click on the x to close any apps you are not using.
