There was a time when a smart candidate actually had multiple offers from which to chose!

There was also a time when deciding where you wanted to work didn't hinge on the breast size of the model the company hired...the times they are a changin'.

Hiring decisions

I think there was a time when hiring decisions hinged on intangibles such as the way an applicant connected with the interviewer or how the interviewer perceived the candidate's demeanor and non-verbal communications. Now it comes down to who formatted the resume correctly for digital scanners to read -- or who used the right font.

Well, i guess they have to have some way to weed out the applicants. And while they may be losing some more creative applicants by religiously sticking to the guidelines, I suspect it's overwhelming to try to sort through hundreds of applications.

HR reps I know tell me they just reject any application that deviates in the slightest from the job listing as a way to pair down the candidates. For example, if the ad says put "admin specialist" in the subject line, anyone who deviates is tossed out -- even if the write John Doe - administrative specialist.

I'm often surprised by the number of people who ignore all of the qualifications and/or instructions for applying -- submit resumes anyway -- and wonder what went wrong.

I think it’s the quintessential problem with any search—there are often many candidates but few excellent candidates. The fundamentals of an interview are somehow still lost. In technology especially finding talented individual that can functions in larger organization is a challenge and its often filled with churn.

Nothing is worse than working with someone who appears unfamiliar with the use of a shower and soap.

Clean and neat -- and no body odor. That's all I ask. You would think that would be a given, but surprisingly, it's not. And violators span all ages.

There's a fine line between  jeans and a t-shirt and someone who looks like he's ready to meet @StreetSmart for a day at Disneyland. I don't mind casual, but there's a limit that some people seem to push.
