I am confused by Newt's recent surge in popularity too.  To me, he represents "business as usual" as evidenced by his side hussel with Freddie.  I don't see him as offering any new ideas or solutions to the nation's problems.

Interesting that Bill Clinton predicted about a month ago that Newt would surge:

Both Clinton and Gingrich are smart guys. And I, too, was impressed with Newt's stand on immigration. However, he has a tendency to lean toward arrogance, and is actually at his best when he is not on the top of the pack. It seems like the minute he gets the lead, he starts demonstrating that characteristic pretentiousness and basically begins whittling away his support. People may not "like" Mitt but they don't hate him. And at times, they really hate Newt. So it speaks to Clinton's good judgement that he "stopped short of predicting that Gingrich would win the nomination."

I know the reward of doing the job will never be a true reward other than serving your country but I just don't understand why we can't find a true business person that runs a successful company, legitimately, to do the same for the country.  As big as an ass Mark Cuban is at times, give someone like him the steering wheel to the country.  Run it like a business, be a jerk at times because you need to be, and make a profit.  There are people that have done it time and time again for various businesses but somehow we continuously get stuck with these political morons.

Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney? Really? Is that the best the Repubs can do?

It is a bit of a sad lot.  As much as I perfer a Republican be in the Whitehouse, the choices are disappointing.

Who wants another G.W. Bush in office?

In my opinion Newt is just another G.W. but speaks better. He wants to attack Iran. Who's going to pay for that war? A political lobbyist can change history if he succeeds. Now that he got Cain out of the way he may win. God bless us all.

Scott, this IS the best the Republicans can do given that their primary process favors ideology over policy, ideology over real-world solutions. They are a party of lithmus tests. If Newt wins the nomination, he will get smashed in a general election because of his many personal liabilities and his big mouth (really, even mention labor child??)....unless there is massive voter fraud or even more massive public hypnosis.

The Problem with Repubs

Broadway,

You're right, ideology gets the best of them...

I am an avowed independent. In the past I have voted for Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians. I'll vote for anybody that has a reasonable amount of common sense. That seems to be lacking these days.

I would vote for the right Republican candidate if they weren't controlled by a wide-range of extremists who insist on a gun-toting white macho man who thinks we can function with a 2% flat tax rate while we invade every country on earth while never over-hauling Social Security. This is simply not feasible, nor does it help the budget problems.

Also, I like business, but that doesn't that mean that the President has to be a wonky stock-option lovin', Wall Street-back-slapping, tax loophole-loving megaolomaniac.

Give us some reasonable candidates... please.
