Agree wtih Dex that Solar doesn't seem like a bright investment now.

The economics of solar are driven by government incentives - national, state, local.  Without the incentives, the paybacks are still too long for most customers.  And incentives in California and New Jerseey are ending without a large batch of new incentives to take their place.

Jacob, the expectation for the US is that there will be improvement in Q2 of 2013. It varies in other parts of the world though.

Strengthening dollar is a two-edged sword. There are those that say it's good because it gives the wage earners more buying power and helps to reduce inflation. But a strengthening dollar also makes exports less competitive, so it threatens to reduce trade.

Why are you still bullish on solar? It seems to me like this sector is tanking.

There is some hope from the emerging markets like India but I doubt it will be enough to hold off much of the impact from the rest of the world. Specially if China has problems. This is when the inter-connectivity between economies of individual countries make it that much harder to make a recovery than before.

But I just don't get these economists who say "Europe may go into recession but we'll avoid it.

@Scott, just curious to know how will the strengthening dollor index impact the US economy ? Is it positive for the US economy overall ?

On second thought, the best meds for the 2012 investment climate may be right in front of me. How about beer stocks?

@PredictableChaos, I think the consumer durables will do always better during recession. I am also bullish on solar energy stock's. There is possibility of turmoil in Iran. If that happens oil might jump to 200$ levels which will increase the demand for renewable energy stocks.

The United States will probably avoid a recession

Good to know that US will avoid recession. Atleast this positivity in US might push the other market higher. Its surprising how all the problem started in US but it impacted rest of the world more than the US itself.
