Gold prices climbed about 1.5% Friday, and it still looks like it will end the year up for the 11th consecutive year.

There's talk of a Bretton Woods type of currency revamp to shore up the Euro.  Some economists are pushing for a gold standard or some commodities basis (Spam has been mentioned).  That's bound to create some extra dynamics in the market.

That's a good point -- much of the reason gold has fallen so viciously is because of the rally in the U.S. Dollar.

@Scott, Do you think gold will correct even further because EUR-USD is expected to breach 1.27 levels ?

Gold has proven its long term value. I think it's a mistake to respond to short term incidents or movement.

That's the key...all investments are volatile right now, but gold seems to hold the best promise of long term stability IMHO
