I Had not really been looking at the Biotechs recently. This was a good reminder and some great information. Thanks
Great post, @Rod. I'm glad that the fundamentals continue strong in biotech and are growing ever stronger for companies such as Bristol-Myers that had lost its way for a while there and Pfizer which is weathering the move to generic Lipitor.
What makes me most optimistic however--about the biotechs--is the global decline in health and the corresponding rise in "wealthy maladies," not only in the US but in rapidly-industrializing nations such as India, China and Brazil.
As a stock-picker friend of mine said recently, "Just visit a grocery store and you'll see that diabetes is alive and growing."
True that...

The demand is growing for sure. Also it's about time that some significant breakthorugh will happen soon in this field. I was told quite many new or start-ups look really promising. Of course those big ones are also making significant progress. So some people predict that we are entering Biotech innovation age in the next couple of years.
I myself start to invest into this field gradually.
150 million people in the US are obese, but weight loss drugs have been a disappointing area due to side effects.
The CDC says Diabetes costs $174B each year. The market for diabetes drugs is currently over $15B and the "holy grail" is a product to replce daily insulin injections.
Rod, any thoughts on Amylin Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: AMLN) ,which just ended a 10 year partnership with Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) for the diabetes/weight loss drug exenatide? Amylin will continue work on exenatide alone.
Exenatide, which is taken by injection, is described by uses as one heck of an appetite killer, although I've also heard complaints about cramping as well.
"forget" or "forgot" about AMLN?
I'm reading that as "forget" -- because people don't seem eager to kill their appetites injecting themselves directly into their stomachs! Ouch!
I think more people would endure the cramps than a needle in the stomach, however flabby that stomach may be...
well that clears it up. LOL. thanks.

Rod, I think when compare with equity investment in banking or IT or real-estate sector, investments in biotechnology sector is considerably good. In other words we can say that from biotechnology sectors returns are promising atleast for the next 5 years.

The data you have provided made me want to take a closer look at Biotech related investments. I have always felt that the industry is generally very volatile. It is very unpredictable when it comes to how successful its drug development and testing goes. But after your reasoning I feel this is an area which offers some good opportunities if pick out the right companies to invest in.
Biotech is showing lots of growth. Just this week, a biotech firm closed on the purchase of a vacant 118,000 Sq. Ft. office building in White Plains, NY -- the county's largest office sale of the year.
HistoGenetics, a biotechnology company which specializes in molecular tissue typing services, plans to develop a major research and development facility and provides hospitals and transplant centers with rapid DNA sequence-based tissue typing. The firm is moving from Ossining, NY, about 20 miles north of White Plains.

that's interesting Noreen, given how CRE is still soft. Had the building been vacant long?
Two years. It was formerly occupied by Malcolm Pirnie, an environmental consulting firm. .

Well I'm glad to see the building is being repurposed -- good sign for the commercial real estate market in NY.
Molecular Dx for tissue is a hot area. A leader, Ventana was acquired by Roche for $3.4B.
Nice Job Rayno Sr., great list. TEVA is popping up on a lot of value screens, BTW.
TEVA has a new CEO from Bristol Myers, a Company that has been hot in biotech.

@Rod, thanks for reminding us that biotech is the sector to invest in this choppy market. Your disclosure also helped us to get insight into the list of the stocks we need to watchout for.

You and a lot of other people as there are shortages of Ritalin and Adderall.
Google New Yorker on this topic as these drugs were extensively covered in an article about 2 years ago.

Shire plc (Nasdaq: SHPGY) is really capitalizing on the ADHD market not only with Adderall XR but also with Vyvanse and Intuniv. It did well in the third quarter. But its got a couple of suits pending for patent infringement (on Vyvanse).
Any projections, Rod?

Maybe it's time to start following the CNS drugs Rod. Has there ever been a time in history when more people needed more medication -- and things don't seem like they'll improve anytime soon.

The CNS market is way beyond my area of expertise. The market is about $75B and includes antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-epleptics. Antidepressants are a growth area with products like Effexor from Wyeth, Cymbalta from Eli Lilly and Lexapro from Forest Labs. If marijuana were legalized for a variety of CNS indications the market could be $50B. For drug developers it is a tough area as drugs can fail to prove efficacy even in late stage studies as shown by Targacept's (TRGT $5.75) antidepressant drug TC-5214. However, a lot of RX peddlers like this area because of the huge market and propensity for people to take a pill to alleviate anxiety and depression. So to play this market look at large cap pharma.

Roche making a hostile offer on Illumina! Up 40% pre-market!!
You read it here folks on Dec 28:
"Bottom fishers should look at Alere (NYSE: ALR), Seracare (Nasdaq: SRLS), and Qiagen(Nasdaq: QGEN), which are all attractive according to price to sales and other metrics. Two solid companies that should be reviewed for buys on weakness are Idexx Laboratories (Nasdaq:IDXX) in veterinary medicine and Genomic Health (Nasdaq: GHDX) for personalized medicine. And Illumina (Nasdaq: ILMN), battered by an earnings miss, is both a value and an acquisition play."
Bumping this up. Good stuff, Rod.
