From what I can gather from the always complete Census data, cash is defined as Cash on hand, demand deposits, and time deposits such as certificates of deposits, but may also include short-term investments in federal securities or commercial and finance company paper.

@Noreen, when you say "cash" does that mean short-term fixed income, i.e., Treasuries, commercial paper, short term corporates, or OR cash as in sitting out the market?
