Given the odds of how things might turn out in Iowa tonight, these words are somewhat reassuring Marvin.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the people of Iowa are really as intelligent as I know they are -- and do not fall for the hype that some of the candidates have been trying to sell them

Same here. I think this time around a lot of interest will be there from the overseas too specially with the current economic crisis and political uprisings around the world. Everyone will be interested in knowing who will lead America through it all. Let's hope it doesn't leave us all bewildered...

According to a Vanity Fair/60 Minutes poll, 2% of voters – and 3% of Republicans – think Mitt Romney's real first name is Gromit.

I lived in Iowa for awhile and although I did not participate in the caucus (it was cold that night and I didn't want to go anywhere), I did come to appreciate Iowans for their intelligence and work ethic.  I think that most of them are able to filter out the hype and claims made by the candidates.

The strangely undemocratic Iowan process compared.

While we're making fun of the Iowans, let's praise the Illinois primary process coming in March. Illinois is just next door and they employ a closed process where only those affiliated with a party can vote, unless they're already dead when anyone can cast a ballot.

It's a most democratic process where voters declare their party affiliation at the polling place to a judge who must then announce it "in a distinct tone of voice, sufficiently loud to be heard by all persons in the polling place." If there is no "challenge," the voter is given the primary ballot of his or her declared party.

Hopefully there won't be ushers holding clubs, standing on the stairs in front of the polling place to determine the party affiliation, as there appeared in Philadelphia during the last election.

Dear Marvin,

The reference to Democratic Centralism with regard to the Iowa Caucuses is brilliant.

I'd like to point out another thing about Iowa's system.  A vote can be had for a piece of really good coffee cake.  If I were running a campaign in Iowa, I'd be sure to sponsor the bars.

Cheers,

Ted.

An 8 vote victory makes you wonder...how many of those 8 considered staying home because it was too cold, cast their votes the way they did because they didnt want to insult the host of the event they attended, or simply liked the name Gromit? (you'll have to scroll down for the chart if you don't understand this last one.)

The media this morning is talking about the "shockingly close vote." But isn't that a function of the voters not having anyone person they are really excited about?

It's what happens when you have a field of candidates so lackluster that it comes down to a toss of a coin. The odds of going one way or another are close to 50/50.

I don't understand how so many people can support a candidate who ctouts his support for a federal ban on gay marriage, and wants to invalidate existing same sex marriages. I'm not gay, but this kind of single issue focus on someone's personal life -- at a time the world is going to hell in a handbasket (not because of who people are sleeping with but because of who they are screwing -- you and me and other investors) leaves me shaking my head.

That's MR. Jim Bob to You!

The highlight of my night was Jim Bob Duggar, the guy with 19 children and a 20th on the way, being interviewed on CNN about his support for Rick Santorum.

Now, THERE is insightful political analysis at its very best!  And to add icing to the cake, another random caucus goer chimed in but couldn't remember Jim Bob's name, and you could see the reporter f-r-e-e-z-e for a second trying to remember if it was Jim Bob or Bob Jim.

It's moments like these that will get me through 'til November!

I'm sorry I missed this @Street Smart! I just tried to find the clip, but stumbled instead upon this bit of Jim Bob insight:

Jim Bob endorses Santorum as our next President, but added that "Republicans are not going to find a perfect candidate, unless it's Jesus Christ."

So there you go. The Republicans have a big job ahead this year ...

I think there's quite a resemblence with this stalwart Democrat. However, there is very little resemblence beyond the physical. I wonder why Jim Bob takes more abuse and more heat.

Fred, it's not the fact that Jim Bob is a Republican. It's the fact that he thinks he's a Rabbit.

While John Edwards will probably never have a chance to meet Jesus Christ -- given the likelihood of where he is headed in the afterlife -- I find it troubling that Jim Bob justifies having 19 (or 20--who'se counting?) children on religious grounds. If you've ever watched the TV show, it is clear that the older kids rear the younger siblings. And the whole thing is just odd.

I don't know Jim Bob from a hole in the wall. I never heard about him until this moment. I have no problem with substantive criticism for any member of any party, but if it's hair style we're worked up about, John Edwards and he are look alikes and I cannot think of any criticism of Jim Bob that would be more damning than siring a child out of wedlock while your wife is dying of cancer, and yet John Edwards has received scant media attention and was almost president.

I think it's time to acknowledge the differences in treatment that people accused of similar offenses receive from the press. Try Cain and Clinton as a starter.

Yeah, well I'm a seeker of the truth. They both have terrible haircuts.

And yes, John Edwards is a scoundrel. A really low person. He did get ripped up in the media for a while. But as we know the media has the attention span of a cockroach so they moved on to other more important things, like Justin Bieber.

I don't know much about Jim Bob but 19 kids is a real eye-opener and very questionable on the grounds that if everybody had 19 kids we'd be in a whole lotta trouble.
