Scott,

That's my fear. I am not sure if ETF already beocmes a bubble or not. The more I look into this, the more I got confused. Really not sure what have been done behind curtain. Even for some mutual funds, I have similar feeling.

Yes, you guys are right. This article summarizes three important factors for picking up an ETF:

1. Bid-ask spread

2. Expense ratio

3. Tracking error.

Quite useful.

Of course there are great funds but I predict that ETFs are the next bubble to burst and we'll be hearing about many frauds and investigations in five years. There are now a gazillion ETFs, many of them don't do what they say to do, there is huge room for trading abuse. Anybody and his cousin can start a "2X leveraged organic banana ETF." Be careful! Definitely watch out for the leveraged funds!

I don't think size alone dictates  size alone dictates lower fees. I think you also have to consider the issuing firm's overall mission, along with the fund objectives.

Another point, I think, is that many smaller funds offer exposure to unique markets not available elsewhere.

Erik, I think after all its all depends up on investors risk bearing capability. Since the market is very much volatile anything can happen at any time.

@Erik thanks for the informative post. Is it true that the ETF's are more tax-efficient than traditional index mutual funds ?

I agree- a really good overview. I fear many of the ETF buyers have no idea why they bought which ones they did.

I like ETF's partcularly IBB for biotech and QQQ for both biotech and tech, excellent trading vehicles. Be careful about 2x and 3x ultrashort ETF's tho.
