I think the soluation you mentioned is something practical. Security is becoming a huge issue though with the recent hacker activity. I hope companies are able to put up secure connections to limit their exposure. Will cloud computing offer the same type of service?

BYOD is also popular because even large communications companies issue equipment that is dated and hard to use. Field computers are often purchased in bulk with an eye on economy and durability not actually getting the job done. My employer issues devices designed for business only- but many people transfer data to iphones and ipads for the added features that allow you to work smarter an faster.
ProfR,
You bring up a good point about services such as Google docs, and dropbox and the like. I know the IT department at my office was not happy when all the engineers starting to bring our tablets in and use them for work. We ended up building our own wireless network on to use our devices and just acceced and shared any docs we needed via the cloud.
This allowed us to access work docs and share with each other while not putting the corp network at risk. The only thing IT asked of us was that we keep all devices password protected.

I agree and risk does need to me managed. A company should have a clear policy and clear information on privacy- this is really important with BYOD. There are ways to secure technology and information, but they need to be thought through, implemented and then communicated.

Yes, this is inevitable. Two things may help here:
1. You do need devise agnostic policies as stated. You also might look at removing the data and possibly business applications from the devises and having them accessed remotely. You can use cloud services and things like Google docs for this. So if a devise is stolen or compromised it does limit the exposure.
2. IT needs to be clear with the users on what they will and will not do here. If you plan to erase data or applications, tell people upfront about this. They can then make an informed choice to use the devise or go back to using a corporate devise.

@Noreen, thanks for sharing with us the industry perspective on BYOD. I feel BYOD is inevitable. I heard even some companies are making BYOD compulsory and are posting BYOD in their job advertisements.
