The research is about improving the efficiency of generating electricity with nuclear reactor. The research did receive funding from industrial groups. They did not talk about the details and I was not interested in the topics either. People need a Ph.D degree in Physics to understand what they talked about.

@Broadway, I would drape myself in Rosary beads while facing toward Mecca if I thought there was a chance of your scenario coming true in the next four years. Fingers crossed, because I AM a moderate Republican...one of only three in captivity!

I'm not really worried about Santorum; I think he will go back to his dungeon soon enough, but Romney is behaving in such a clueless, tone-deaf manner it really distresses me.  Are ALL the good advisors already hired by others?  Can't he find ANYBODY to manage him better than he's being managed now?

I'm worried that at the rate the Republicans are continuing to pander to ultra-conservatives, Obama will eat them for breakfast with the labor, middle class and Hispanic votes and cruise to re-election.  I can live with Obama, but I don't think he deserves re-election without a fight.

What bothers me about the Heartland thing is that it appears to be a direct payment to one federal worker, and it was not fully disclosed from the start. It just seems like a conflict of interest -- at a minimum, we need to know who is funding critical research.

Ahh, way to look at the glass as half full, @Broadway! But it would be nice to see.

@ValueHiker, what were these acquaintances researching? What was this advanced research they were looking into? What were their results?

@StreetSmart, I think the dynamics are far more complex and interesting to watch this go-around. So, Santorum frequently says wildly Medieval things at times, and he represents enough of the Republican base to be making a run at this thing. But he is still only one of four Rs in the running -- and it could turn out that ALL four stick in the race until the convention. Imagine that! If that's the case, the Republicans could blow themselves out of the water, and cause deep intraparty riffs that won't heal any time soon. That could mean that reasonable Republicans might be more willing to work with resonable Dems in the next four years. Wishful thinking, but just put yourself in the shoes of a moderate Republican -- a social moderate and an economic conservative -- and see what you think about your party's current state.

I knew some research scientists from Department of Energy, they do get fundings from special interests group, of course in the name advanced research. There are less funding regulations on scientist than on politicans.

I'd like to at least think government scientists are objective. If a scientist is getting a stipend from a special interest group, then odds are he may interpret the data more favorably in that group's direction.

Shudder to think there are people who actually think like that.
