Sourcefire surges 12%

Sourcefire shares this morning are up more than 12%, hitting a new high at $57.95, following a strong Q1 report. Revenue rose 50% to $46.3 million (the consensus was $41.6 million) and EPS of 11 cents beat the consensus by three cents. Management lifted 2012 revenue growth guidance to 25% from 20% because of solid demand for the company's core intrusion prevention offerings and an improved outlook for the U.S. federal business. The new next-generation firewall should begin to contribute to revenue growth by the end of the year.

Wow. That would be a huge deal if it ctually were to happen. Putting them on the map for the full enterprise stack in addition to point to point solutions for larger organizations and government. Imagine the entire datacenter with ONLY Dell equipment.

@philtheinvestor: No prob. I think Dell will continue on the M&A path to build up its enterprise biz even more. There were recent rumors that Riverbed Technology (RVBD) might be on its radar screen. But that would be a large (and pricey) deal for Dell, so I don't put much faith in that chatter.

Thanks for the breakdown. There's the good 'ol 80/20 rule in effect. I figured it would be in that range.

Wow, that's a big number. Is there a number on the percentage of enterprise/business to consumer sales on that projection?

Excellent point, @ProfR.  I'm reserving judgment because Dell didn't overpay, but nobody can accuse Dell of visionary strategy in recent years.  This COULD be a mis-step and Sonic Wall will be back on the auction block soon enough...

Very true ProfR, IT security in general requires a lot of training. My company actually has a whole department whos job is to manage our security infrastructor, and my understanding is most large companies are set up the same way.

Also, these security products require a different type of expertise to sell and support. You cannot have someone who knows how to sell a server begin selling security services without lots of training and a big change in how you operate.
