Gundlach of DoubleLine Capital

Quoting @Noreen's comment on another thread -

According to a tweet from CNBC's Jane Wells, bond king Jeffrey Gundlach of DoubleLine Capital said at Thursday night's CFA Forecast Dinner in San Diego, "one of my favorite generational shorts is Apple... the rainmaker is gone, and I don't see people lining up all night for iPad 482."

The new dividend makes shorting AAPL more insane than it was before.

Where do they go from here?

I like the idea of Apple giving some money to investors. But one problem here is that Apple (and others) are sitting on cash with nothing to invest in. That is a problem for the industry and the longer term revenue of Apple.

I think Apple should buy one of the car companies and turn it into an iCar. Imagine that market!

A lot of electronics are already going into cars. Facebook, etc. interfaces in some new cars are already planned. Apple would be good here since they are good at user interface. Any car companies up for sale?

Saab needs a lot of help. I believe they are still in bankruptcy. Used to be a cool car, until GM destroyed them.

I was thinking along design lines as well as electronics. Apple could inject some savvy new design concepts into Saab.

This was sort of a tongue-and-cheeck suggestion but the more I think of a Saab/Apple merger, the more I like it.

That's an amazing run for Apple Scott. You are right about them needing to diversify a bit. All this time the focus on core products and product innovation has been successful but I doubt whether they could keep on innovating at such a high rate in the long term. It is high time they invested in another area and come out with a new innovation or another 'wow' product. Your idea of the car market looks good. Whatever they do they should play according to their core competencies.

Maybe eventually we'll discover Apple put next generation subliminal messaging in all of its products to make us desire having them -- and compel us to upgrade -- in spite of ourselves.

Noreen, If they had technology to do subliminal messages - that would be worth patenting!

The problem for Apple is still what comes after the iPad?

Exactly. Are we going to have paradigm innovation -- the rumors about this breakthrough TV are already flying -- or more incremental innovation, like a better iPad screen?

I doubt if it's something that can be patented. But I have to admit I've often wondered what magic Apple performs to make the world collectively believe that we all need its products...or be the last uncool person standing.
