Yes, really. The company screws up and the FTC negotiates a settlement that includes payment of the scammers legal fees. Unbelievable!

You'll appreciate her decsioon even more in light of this: In addition to the lack of an admission of wrongdoing in the New Jersey case, Judge Bumb said the proposed settlement bothered her because it contained a "carve out" allowing money set aside for payment of the fine to be used to pay the company's legal fees.

Is the FTC crazy for even considering such a settlement or what?

It is good to see ajudge doing the right thing. It is sad that we have to call out this behavior because it is what should be expected. Nevertheless, this judge got it right.
