I've been to Johnstown PA, and I'm trying my best to think of a reason why someone would want to fly there.
I can't think of a single reason.

Forget jet planes. Imagine what we could accomplish if we siphoned money from political TV ads and instead spent it on something productive. And by productive, I don't mean piping dirty oil from Canada.
Because we can't get Washington to agree to spend $10 without wrangling and grandstanding. Can you imagine what it would take to get agreement on a multi-billion dollar project -- funded by money we don't have?

I find it hard to wrap my head around those figures.That every $1
billion of federal investment supports 36,000 jobs in public
transportation and related industries. These jobs are estimated to
make a $1.8 billion contribution to the GDP annually.
If 1 Billion could generate such a high return - why not 10 billion?
Maybe we could do two projects at once -- while we're digging to put new railroad tracks in the ground, we could dig even deeper and lay the pipe to bring the oil from Canada...or at least move it out of North Dakota.
In general I am not a huge fan of govenment subsidies or government projects. I lived in New Jersey long enough to see what goes wrong (check out NJ Transit Lautenberg train terminal in Seacaucus which may be one of the largest, corrupt, misdirected public works projects in train history).
But I also see how much we spend on defense and bombs. And in a day in age when a fighter ject costs $60M, you have to wonder if maybe we swapped a war or two for a high-speed rail project if that might have a longer-term ROI then dropping bombs on people.

That's true @telecomfreq it would be a really big undertaking. When you think of all the laws and state governments that will need to be involved it is bound to be a very difficult task. China might be a better model to look at but they have their own set of problems.
