Al Green said it best, "Love & Happiness" If you don't have love in your life you most likely won't experience any happiness. Whether you love money, cars, or your family, you hav to have some love to exist (at least in my mind).

That is all true. But I was just saying there have been some surveys that say generally people who are religious tend to be happier. I am sure there are other ways to be happy also.

Not sure it's safe to say that religious people are happier because they help people. It really depends on your religion. If you're a christian missionary perhaps you are feeling you're helping people, but buddists are more about inner peace. And please remember that you can help people and not believe in a conventional religion.

I think that is correct. Once you get to a certain level with respect to basic needs, then you need something more than money alone. However, this level is different for different people. There have been some surveys that say that people who are religious are generally more happy. I think that is because they see helping others and their family are important.

The hard part is recognizing once you've climbed to a safe place on the ladder, and then having the courage to invest some of your efforts in something greater than money alone.

I think it is very much like Maslow's hierarchy of need. When you are foraging for food and trying to survive ( like the bottomof the economic ladder) , then some amount of money makes life much easier and allows for more happiness. When you have all you need and are buying things because you are bored ( self actualization), then more money means very little and doesn't make you appreciably happier. It just depends on where you are on the ladder.
Ok...well money may not be the most important thing. But you have to eat, have a roof over your head, have the right clothes for your job, pay for transportation...
So what income level is necessary for happiness? Is there a minimum? And once you reach a certain threshold of having all the necessities, does the payoff of more money evaporate?

Icebraker, I agree. I think it is family, faith in religion and helping others that make people happy. If you focus here you get a sense of contentment and well being that money cannot bring.
definitely no money. Its family, faith and helping others.

Maybe it's just easier to create happiness in a vacuum.
