Maybe I'm too confident. Take a look at this:

Chairman and CEO of Gilead Sciences ( GILD ) John C Martin sold 145,450 shares on 06/01/2012 at an average price of $48.75.

Chairman and CEO John C Martin sold 727,250 shares of GILD stock from February to June. SVP, CFO Robin L Washington sold 37,329 shares of GILD stock in February, March and April. EVP, Corp & Med Affairs Gregg H Alton sold 103,000 shares of GILD stock in April, May and June.

That's not a good pattern

Gilead has a lot going for it long term. The Hep C market seems to be increasing. Just read that 26.7 percent of homeless adults tested and surveyed in downtown Los Angeles' skid row were infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) -- more than 10 times the 2 percent rate among the general U.S. population. 46.1 percent of them were unaware that they were infected. Four percent were HIV-positive.

That's a huge public health issue that this company is likely to address

Last Friday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) delayed the approval of two of Gilead's HIV-drugs, Truvada and Quad, until September.

Truvada has already been a treatment drug and is prescribed by some doctors as a preventive measure as well. Only one out of the fourteen members of the FDA panel has raised concerns about Quad, a new once-a-day, one-pill combination of four drugs.

What's your prediction? Do you think these drugs are going to be approved and will help Gilead Sciences (GILD) to improve its competitive position in the HIV drugs' market?

Noreen,

Thanks for those numbers. It always amazes me to see the overall health care costs for certain illnesses. Especially when some are caused by certain lifestyle behaviors.

@Dex,

Yes, sometimes those impact is more important. But anyway, this is a good news for patients and investors. I'd love to see more news like this.

That's true, but there has to be an economic incentive for a company to want to treat or cure it.

You can't measure the merits of a treatment for an illness in healthcare costs alone, Phil. You have to look at the impact the disease has on human lives and the quality of those lives.

Lifetime health care costs for a patient with chronic hepatitis B has been estimated at $65,000 in the absence of liver transplantation. For the 150,000 HBV carriers with significant liver damage, the lifetime health care costs in the U.S. have been estimated to be $9 billion. Assuming an estimated survival of 25 years, the annual health care costs for the affected U.S. population with chronic hepatitis B is $360 million. Based on the same economic analysis, treatment of chronic hepatitis B with interferon is projected to increase life expectancy by about three years and reduce the aggregate health care costs.
