Maybe now that technology has changed media -- and made it possible for citizen journalists to create their own content and "TV" stations -- maybe it is also time to rethink spending millions of dollars a year on "public" broadcasting.

Can someone explain to me why PBS needs "sponsorship" or advertising --whatever you call it -- if it also gets public funding and collects donations from telethons too? And does it get a percentage of sales from Seseme Street, etc products?

I agree. It seems to me that all this underwriting is just another glorified form of advertising.

Its not advertising, they cal it Underwriting.... LOL

I really enjoy PBS, but I find that all of the "Underwriting" becomes annoying and I feel like it cheapens the programing for me.

I wonder what they are planning to do next. The tv audience always crave for more good content, I doubt they would want to keep looking at tv commercials.

I agree. They will lose my donations if they become commercial like all the others. There is no point at all in taking ads and trying to claim you  are public.

If PBS is taking ad dollars, can we get it off the public dole?

If PBS is going to have ads like every other broadcast station, then there is no point.

What's the point of public broadcasting?
