No...and if I had, I would have declined. The value of the structured settlement is in holding it for the agreed time to accomplish a stated goal, in this case to protect a minor for a given length of time. It would not have been beneficial to my daughter to cash out her benefits before she needed them for college.

There are companies that actively seek out beneficiaries of structured settlements hoping to get them to sign over the settlement coming in favor of a much smaller lump sum payment. We're you ever approached by any of these vultures?

Thanks for the post, Noreen.

@ Tenacious: In addition to tax-free income, here are two other long-term benefits you'll see with a structured settlement: No ongoing trust or management fees and full payments even if you return to work.  More information is available at the nonprofit National Structured Settlements Trade Assn. (http://nssta.com/resources/nssta-brochures).

I don't know when Macy's lost its mojo, but I agree. What a mess of a department store.

With all the major parties out of business fro one reason or another, I hope the annuity has survived and still has some value. I have never seen a case as frought with problems as this one.

Rarely, but not really because of this incident. I find Macy's disorganized and the clerks generally unhelpful.

@Noreen, thanks for the valuable information. I will pass it along to friends with kids under 10 year old. I thought it is a rare accident, now it seems wide spread.

That's a sad but unfortunately common accident @ValueHiker.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has identified window coverings with cords as one of the top five hidden hazards in the home. About once a month a child between 7 months and 10 years old dies from window cord strangulation and another child suffers a near strangulation. In recent years, CPSC has recalled over five million window coverings, including Roman shades, roller and roll-up blinds, vertical and horizontal blinds.

Most window blinds sold prior to November 2000 have inner cords (for raising the slats of the blinds) that can be pulled by a child and form a loop in which the child's neck can entangle. Consumers should immediately repair these types of blinds.

For a free repair kit, call the Window Covering Safety Council at 800-506-4636 or visit windowcoverings.org.

It was long time ago and a true story happened in nearby city. A couple had a toddler at home, one day, the toddler was played in her bedroom while parent were busy with daily chore. The bedroom had a window with a blind, the toddler played with the strings of the blind, and accidently hung herself. It is too late before the parent found the incident.

Parent shall always keep a close eyes on the kids.
