it will not run Word, but there are alternative programs like Open Office that has programs like Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access.

@Telocomefreq, I agree with your observation. But I am bit disappointed with Open-Office, its not as powerful as Microsoft office. I don't think you can run macro's using Open-office. Sadly once you get addicted to microsoft tools its hard to get adjusted to other free open-source tools.

Apple is going to start the downfall from now on.

@Value Hiker, I feel Shuttleworth shuld try to make his company the next Microsoft and not Apple becuase the business model of Ubuntu is more closer to MS. Having said that why are you so bearish on Apple ?

@Joey, thanks for post. Am excited to know that Ubuntu is trying to venture into new areas. I have used both Red-Hat and Ubunit but I am big fan of Ubuntu because its very user friendly. Just curious to know if MS will be worried about these developments ?

That's pretty interesting, If Dell offers the XPS 13 laptop without Windows, I wonder how much the price will drop.

Nice one Joey...ahead of the curve:

Canonical has said it expects Ubuntu to ship on 18 million PCs next year.

Chris Kenyon, Canonical's VP of sales and business development forecasting, predicts the firm's operating system will ship on 18 million machines in 2013 -- or five per cent of worldwide PC shipments.

Kenyon's prediction represents more than double the number of PCs shipped currently with Ubuntu and while that might seem optimistic the firm has been on a roll when it comes to OEM support. Prior to Canonical's launch of Ubuntu 12.04 it announced certification for HP Proliant servers, and yesterday it revealed that it has been working with Dell on an Ubuntu image for Dell's headline XPS 13 ultrabook.

@TelecomFreq

yes, now that you put it that way... service contracts for consumers that want a free-OS. Hmm, doesn't sell like a real attractive market!

@Value Hiker

agreed... and when you are talking about Apple you are talking about the 100-year storm, the most sucessful company of the last 100 years.

That's interesting. Thank you for the information Telecomfreq. I guess for now I'll just stick with windows and Mac. Like Scott says they should have a good strategy on how to move forward. I think it is prudent to just wait and see what happens at the moment.

Shuttleworth wants to make his company the next Apple.

@Joey, please avoid the "Next Apple" curse. According to Peter Lynch, I think Shuttleworth just isssued the death sentence to both Canonical and Apple

when people tout a stock as the next of something, it often marks the end of properity not only for the imitator, but also for the original to which it is being compared.

To be fair, maybe shuttleworth was right, Apple is going to start the downfall from now on. :)

It all really depends on the success of their tablets and Ubuntu-TV. Anybody who wants to run Ubuntu on their desktop, laptop, and netbook can just download the OS for free. No need to run out and get a specific computer or shell out however much for a disk loaded with the program. The truly computer savvy can also just load the OS onto the phones and tablets they already have, and completely cut out the middle man. It'll be a tough sell, for sure.
