Thanks for that link @Noreen. I just referred my cousin in South Carolina to the site. She's feeling overwhelmed trying to help a relative.

Such an important issue I have seen many seniors loose what they worked for their whole lives because they didn't have estate planning, it's critical to their financial stability but something so few understand.
Cat Tail, Local branches of the Alzheimer's Association or Area Agencies on Aging can often put you in touch with a financial planner who can advise you about the various federal, state, and community resources that are available. You can locale an Agency on Aging here: http://www.n4a.org/about-n4a/?fa=aaa-title-VI
I have a couple of neighbors who don't seem to have much in terms of assets. Are there any low cost resources for people like this?

All of us -- at any age -- should have a plan for how we want our affairs handled if we are not in a position to call the shots. But how many of us do?

The problem with mental incompetence is that we never expect it will happen to us, even though statistically it is likely to happen earlier than we think from any one of a number of reasons -- from dementia to a car crash.
The hardest conversations are often the most necessary. My mom had Alzheimer's, and depleted everything she owned for her care. But we were fortunate in a way that her assets lasted as long as she did -- something I attrinute more to luck than planning.

It is good to know of the many assistance programmes available. This is something we never think of until the need arises and at that time it may be too late to take the appropriate measures. I have heard many stories of how the elderly get scammed and I think it is important to have people you trust take care of things when you no longer can. Are you aware of any recent scams deliberately designed to con the elderly?

Sherri- this is a greta article discussing the very thing most people don't want to discuss - until it is too late. I think it is very wise to make some plan in case the worst happens . Uncle Sam is not generous after death.
