Errors in Credit Reporting

I have a very unusual name. I know...Street Smart...it has such a nice ring to it...WHY aren't more people naming their babies that?
But seriously, I am the only person in the United States and probably the world with my name, but that doesn't stop the credit bureaus from getting SOMETHING wrong. I have found wrong addresses, wrong medical bills, strange department store accounts in strange cities...you name it.
I order one report from each credit bureau every three months on a rolling basis so I can see them all within a one year period. I have also found that lately American Express seems to be offering a "see your score for free" promotion. They want to sell a credit monitoring service, but it's not necessary to buy it to check out the score using the promotion.

Noreen- I'm so glad you mentioned Credit Repair Services. Thousands of consumers waste much needed funds paying money to people who promise to help them but wind up plunging them into more debt.
ha! that is true. That would be the mark of death. Greek Bank = no credit for you!
Yes, it's oddly comforting to have it on there. Now if it was a Greek bank, I'd feel differently.
That Deutsche Bank story is pretty weird. Maybe you should put in for German pension benefits?
Ha ha Heinrich! Yes, let's look for more credit responsible friends...
Just recently my husband and I checked our file. One of the Big Three claims my husband is a former employee of Deutsche Bank. He's not. So he called to explain that he has never worked for Deutsche Bank, much less any bank. The response? Send proof. ???
How do you disprove a negative?
It's not like Deutsche Bank is a bad thing to see on a credit report -- it's not Spirit Airlines! So he said the heck with it, and now, forever more, he will be listed as a former employee of the German bank. Wonder if we are eligible for benefits?
And when there's a mistake in your file, it's even worse.
In my experience, there is ALWAYS a mistake in your credit report. It's not a question of when. Wrong former address. Erroneous reports from creditors. Confusion about people with similar names. (And why is it that whenever there is a pair of people with similar names, one always has spotless credit and the other is a total basket-case?)
So I roll my eyes at the idea that my credit report will now be partly based on what's on Facebook. I bet we'll see some really creative errors now.

The US median FICO score is 720. Remember, median means the middle number (not the average): half the scores are higher, half are lower.

What's an average credit score?
