You can't rule out all social media investment based on FB.
If you had invested in Bankrate, Zynga, Zillow, LinkedIn and Jive Software, for instance, your first six month returns would have exceeded the Nasdaq by nearly 50%.
Now if you add a bunch of others to those winners--including Angie's List, Demand Media, Friendfinder, Groupon, HomeAway, and Pandora, your same six month returns would have been 2.2% lower than the Nasdaq average. You can play with the numbers yourself here.

Greed,
FB insiders and bankers priced the stock too high -- they squeezed out every penny for themselves and didn't leave any potential gain for anyone else.

Here's a question: what do you all think went wrong with Facebook's IPO?

@phil, yeah I expected the FB IPO to not go so well, but I never anticipated the horror show that it's turned into...

Technically, based on how the FB stock is tanking, some people STILL do not believe social networking is a 'real' thing.

@Scott, yeah I was thinking the same thing about the two points you brought up. They seemed to choose some obscure companies haha. Just looking at the thing as a mini-timeline, I found it interesting (especially about theglobe.com)

that graphic is very hard to follow.
Also they appear to have randomly cherry-picked IPOs they want to demo for whatever reason.
What about uber-successful IPOs like Google? Priceline.com?

Very fascinating post, phil. I completely forgot about theglobe.com! Very interesting to see how social networking wasn't really considered a real thing back then and now, there's barely anyone who isn't hooked into some social networking site.
