"HP is now showing signs of a new vision for the printing division, Holt said, with a caveat: "Printing is a place where we still need to see more evidence that they have a plan and that the plan is going to work."

If recent reviews from professional photographers and image specialists are any indication there is potential for HP here.

The less expensive HP is getting higher marks than Epson in many of the comparison studies and articles.

At the end of the day, cost cutting is not a business strategy and only gets a company so far.  That's the position HP is in, as @tokyogai and @ProfR pointed out in their posts below.

Of course on the cost-cutting side, HP can cut 27,000 employees or stop hiring and firing 27,000 different CEOs with golden parachutes.  I think the latter would be the best start of all!

Tokyogal,

You are correct. This is a start - but where is the revenue growth going to come from? As companies use fewer servers and move some applications to cloud and as some companies use more tablets/iPads versus PCs - not sure where the future is for HP?

The HP moves are a start, but the key porfit areas of the company such as business systems and servers are still on the decline. It is widely reported int he industry that HP is not even trying to sell Autonomy licenses - they haven't gotten their arms around the business. I think they need to do a lot more than a big layoff to get back on focus.
