Thanks for the answer to my question about the development environment. If published API's were easier to work with, do you think that we would have more productive vertical apps by now?

@Street Smart,
Quite a nice post. Especially the first recommendation. Companies which value customers' values will have a much better chance to succeed.

@phil, I guess it's all in the way you look at it. To me it just seems like Facebook (and all social media outlets, really) has become nothing more than a glorified ad server. Perhaps that's the biggest problem with facebook - so many companies are now just using it as a means to convert likes into pageviews.
I guess to those that matter, there's always enough newcomers (mostly younger crowd) to tune out the complaints of the older crowd that remembered when it was something fun and provided value.

To Noreen's point, FB initially was all about keeping in touch with friends and family and now it has branched out into so many different "ventures" that the whole communicating thing is the last on the list. Now people are playing games, sharing stupid images/videos etc. and not saying much to each other.
I personally think that this will inevitably lead to the downfall of FB. They tried to make FB an important part of ppl's lives by doing that stupid timeline thing, but I think it's only a matter of time before something else comes along and makes FB the next MySpace/Friendster/etc.

@Phil, you bring up a really good point. It goes to show how ingrained in our culture FB has become that even those who are against it were tempted to join at one point or another. There is something to that whole "see what the fuss is about" thing.
Just to get an idea, how many people on IU are FB users? If so, what keeps you coming back? If not, why not?
The contention, Phil, is that something that seemed to have merit at one point has devolved to a lot of nonsense -- and that even former advocates of FB are rethinking their committment.
PredictableChaos,
Although those things ARE annoying and people have a ton of complaints about them, you have to remember that you have to first be on FB to get to that level of annoyance. So there was something that got you... and kept you on the site long enough to get to that point.

@Street Smart, excellent post re: the 3 questions to ask yourself. As a general user, these are also good rules to ask yourself (minus rule #3). I think the problem with these questions is how difficult they are to answer...but then again if they were easy to answer, then anyone would be investing haha.

"Because hey, when it comes to Facebook's ongoing relationships with users, investors, etc. it's a dog eat dog world right?"
As a developer, I'd like to also add that they are just as painful when trying to just deal with their API...considering that they have a development "roadmap" which they rarely follow and add/remove things on a whim.
