Noreen interesting stats especially after Netflix had such public missteps. How do you think that Amazon and its Kindle with streaming will impact their share this year?

Just to touch on this for a second, it seems fairly obvious that the future of the movie rental business is heading towards fully online. I'm an avid movie watcher, and I haven't stepped foot in a blockbuster in about 3 or 4 years. It's a very interesting thing watching the progression of the online movie business from niche concept to being the singular way that people get their movies. The increase in the amount of digital sales/rentals of videos is fascinating from the perspective of someone who remembers going to a video store almost every friday night and spending 4 bucks on 4 horror movies on VHS...times sure have changed.

@Noreen, that really is something! Remember how (in a not too distant past) Netflix was blundering left and right and seemed like they were destroying themselves? Sure looks like they regained some of that foothold they were desperate to relinquish to various competitors...
Just when you think you can predict which companies will win and which will lose comes this report from information and analytics provider IHS (NYSE: IHS).
According to a new IHS Screen Digest Broadband Media Market Insight Report, Netflix surged past Apple in 2011 to become the largest U.S. online movie service in revenue terms.
Netflix's share of U.S. online movie revenue soared to 44 percent in 2011, up from less than 1 percent in 2010. Meanwhile, Apple's share of total revenue declined to 32.3 percent last year, down from a 60.8 percent in 2010.
Dan Cryan, research director for digital media at IHS, said, "The online movie business more than doubled in 2011 to reach $992 million and it is expected to double this year as well."
