The subscribers of newspaper were declining fast due to competition of online publishers, and the cash cow of newspaper (classified ad) was slaughtered by online advertisement like craigslist. My guess is that Mr. Buffett made the same mistake as he did on World Book Encyclopedia.

So basically what Newhouse is doing is keeping the print publications alive - barely - so he can have a vehicle for advertisers. To hell with the news--it'll be even older than the previous day. But you'll be able to clip your coupons!
