At least with 3X per week, days could be added at some point.  If Newhouse had pulled the plug altogether, that would have been that.

Having spent many years reading the San Francisco Chronicle, the worst paper in America, let me say that it was/is so devoid of news, that missing a day was never a problem.  Better something of substance 3X a week than nothing every day.

And all those nostalgic Facebookers should put their money where their mouths are. I'm betting not many of them were actual paying subscribers.

The Facebook page is bitter sweet, though I have to say one guy made a good point.

Tommy Leerschen: The reading of a newspaper is not unlike sex. It is better done in a tactile way, not on a screen.

You can get a sense of the city's outrage on  Facebook (savethepicayune) and at www.savethepicayune.com.

Obviously there is still an appetite for ads in New Orleans. I bet there is an equal appetite for news. But no one seems to care about that.

I find it hard to believe that you can make "daily" newspapers better able to compete with the Internet by having them publish less frequently.

The saddest part of the story is that the T-P was selling about a quarter million copies daily before Katrina.  After Katrina circulation sank by 40%, and most of that was not due to recession.  It was due to people and businesses leaving New Orleans. As for the other Newhouse papers that are cutting back, I have no idea why.

I don't agree with the Times-Picayune going to three days a week, even though I know that things are tight in the newspaper print business.

I agree that this really looks like a mistake.
