It really all comes down to the readers and subscribers. If they don't sign up and pay, the paper will still go under. If they show more support, it may be printed more days.

Print publications have a place. You have the right idea Street Smart-read a varied selection to get a good cross section of opinions.

Sorry, @Fred! I posted in haste and I agree upon re-reading that my comment was pretty cryptic.
The part I should have made explicit that was alluded to in the link I posted is how the younger generation claims to be getting its "news" from sites like the Colbert Report and The Daily Show. They can't (or don't bother to) distinguish between editorial reporting and highly editorialized content.
Therefore, I prefer newspapers regardless of their political slant because it's in their ethos to write news and interesting op/ed. What appealed to me about the Times editorial piece that I posted was the notion of just saying "no" to the spin of news broadcasts, snarky TV shows and talk radio as well as the notion of a liberal doing such soul searching.
I'm a dying breed in MANY ways, not the least of which are being a moderate Republican and a reader of print. I love to read different viewpoints and I think I do a pretty good job of keeping an open mind and not getting pigeonholed. But one of the things that helps me do that is access to great hometown print media like the NY Times and Wall Street Journal, as well as our local Gannett paper. If all the people of New Orleans can do from now on is tune into broadcast news, they will be the poorer for it.

Okay @Street Smart, I give up.
What is it about the article you cited that makes you support newspapers. Is it an example of balanced news reporting or an example of spin? Is it a reason to support newspapers or to condemn them in your opinion?

LOL, that's a funny way to put it.
But I really don't agree Marvin's suggestion "Every city should have a standing journalistic institution, staffed and ready to go, in case there is news". I love rading newspaper and I believe it still has its postion, even in the future. But newspaper buisness shall be on their own feet, not subsided by tax payers. Truely I believe Warren Buffet is right, at least some newspapers will find a way or two to survive and even getting better.
